The road

Casino Nova Scotia from end to end

Nova Scotia has a casino at each end of one long road, on the Halifax waterfront and on George Street in Sydney. This page follows the map's road line town by town, measuring every distance as a straight line between map points.

Highways 118, 102, 104 and 4

The road line on the map leaves the Halifax casino and crosses through Dartmouth on Highway 118. It joins Highway 102 and runs north to Truro. There it takes Highway 104, the Trans-Canada, heading east. New Glasgow and Antigonish lie along this stretch, and then the road crosses the Canso Causeway.

On Cape Breton Island the line stays on Highway 104. Then it follows Highway 4 along East Bay into Sydney, ending at the casino on George Street. A routing service found this line on OpenStreetMap roads. It is one way to make the drive, not the only one. Other routes across the province exist, and this guide does not rank them.

Towns along the line

  • Dartmouth, Cole Harbour, Westphal, Fall River and Windsor Junction sit on the Halifax edge of the line, all within 6 km of it.
  • Stewiacke comes next, then Truro, 82 km from the Halifax casino and 255 km from Sydney's as the crow flies.
  • Westville, New Glasgow, Trenton and Stellarton follow, New Glasgow sitting 127 km in a straight line from Halifax's casino and 200 km from Sydney's.
  • Antigonish lies 165 km from the Halifax casino and 151 km from the Sydney casino as the crow flies.
  • Mulgrave and Port Hawkesbury sit at the Strait of Canso, near the mainland and island ends of the causeway.

Over the strait to Cape Breton

The Canso Causeway carries the road across the Strait of Canso. On one side is mainland Nova Scotia, on the other Cape Breton Island. Mulgrave sits near the mainland end. Port Hawkesbury sits near the island end, where the line stays on Highway 104.

As the crow flies, the causeway is 202 km from the Halifax casino. From the Sydney casino the figure is 110 km. Both are straight lines between map points. The road itself runs longer on each side, and the guide does not put a time on either stretch.

Straight lines, longer roads

Between the two casinos the straight-line distance is 312 km, measured from the Halifax building to the Sydney one. Roads are longer than that line. Every figure on this guide is taken as the crow flies between map points, and no driving times are given. The map line itself was found by a routing service on OpenStreetMap roads.

The tool on this page takes any town from its list and measures it against both casinos. It also opens directions in Google Maps for the actual road.

Measure your town

Pick any town in the list: the map draws two straight lines, one to each casino, and gives both lengths with a link for directions.

Before you set off

Measured in a straight line, is Antigonish nearer Sydney's casino or Halifax's?
It is closer to the Sydney casino. As the crow flies, Antigonish is 151 km from the Sydney casino and 165 km from the Halifax casino. Antigonish is the first town on the line where that holds.
Which highway crosses the Canso Causeway?
On the map's road line, Highway 104, the Trans-Canada, crosses the causeway. The line stays on Highway 104 on Cape Breton Island before turning onto Highway 4 along East Bay.
How long does the drive take?
This guide gives no driving times. It measures straight lines between map points, such as the 312 km between the two casinos. Roads run longer than those lines.
